Blender |
I developed an entire video in Blender. It AM great. But it's got a memory leak
on machines with ATI cards and is difficult to learn. |
Lightwave, 3D Studio MAX, Maya |
AVG 7.0 |
Why pay for virus protection, when you can have it for free? Nuff said. |
Symantec AntiVirus |
KeyPass |
Not sure about the safety of this one, but Dan swears by it. |
Unknown |
Lavasoft Ad-Aware |
It would be better if this just ran in the background. That way I wouldn't have to run it every so often! |
Yahoo |
TrueCrypt |
Though this can be used to mount a drive letter to an encrypted file, it falls down slightly on ease-of-use and in not allowing for growable hard drives. |
Unknown |
Mozilla Firefox 1.0.1 |
Yay Firefox! All we need now is file:// to work in a drag and drop manner and we can leave the Blue 'e' for good. Still 5 Star though |
Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera |
Float's Mobile Agent 2.0 |
I use FMA to get the pictures out of my Sony T630. However, an otherwise impressive device management tool falls over on so many points including: SCARY DUPLICATE-ALL-YOUR-CONTACTS sync with Outlook. Slooow sync (should be important things first). Poor GUI in places. It's still best-of-breed, it just ain't that good. |
Manufacture-bundled evil-ware. |
Skype 1.1.0.79 |
Not really necessary when you've got Windows Messenger EXCEPT for the PSTN interconnect capability. However, the quality of the audio is phenomenal, even over speakers, the far end hears no echo! |
Windows messenger, MSN messenger |
ActiveState ActivePerl |
Love Perl. Really, really love
Perl. Regular expressions. Great. But I'm moving back towards Java, so less useful these days. |
Java, Python, PHP |
Amaya |
HTML editor - W3C standard |
All sorts |
Apache HTTP Server 2.0 |
No doubt abaout it, this is the grandaddy of web servers.
A little heavyweight. |
Fizmez Web Server |
ConTEXT 0.97.6 |
A completely flawless notepad.exe replacement. A programmer's dream. With colourised syntax-spotting and support for every programming language under the sun, this application would get 5 stars anyway, but add to that PROPER TABBED indenting, select and (shift)tab for block (un)indenting and you'll never need another IDE again. Unless you're some kind of visual programming freak. |
Notepad, Textpad |
Fizmez Exemplar Profiler 0.1 |
A Profiling application for C# programs run using: "mono --profile". Uses a similar GUI to SpaceMonger |
WinCacheGrind, KCacheGrind |
MySQL |
Configuation difficulties and recent changes in password hashing and a security concern have taken the shine off MySQL a bit. Having said that, I'd never use Oracle if MySQL was available instead. |
Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server |
NIS Edit 2.0.3 |
An editor (and Wizard) for NSIS installation (NSI) files. Very
easy to use and comprehensive in scope. |
Notepad |
NSIS |
Great for creating installers for your Windows software. Could do with a decent built-in GUI. |
WISE |
Open SSH |
Yet another SSH client |
PuTTY |
PHP |
I keep writing classes only to find they've already been written and built into PHP. My main criticism would be that the class structure and commonality of approach is a little ill-thought out. A lot could be learnt from the Java community on this one. Having said that, it's a lot easier than jumping through all the J2EE hoops every time you change a bit of code. |
J2EE |
PuTTY Suite 0.56 |
Absolutely flawless. Whether you need a
simple TTY, command line SSH, tunnels, X11, PuTTY is the undesputed king of SSH. What's more, with a bit of clever port 139 forwarding, you can mount a drive letter to your linux server - yay! |
OpenSSH |
Samurize |
App for monitoring your machine |
SQLite |
Not sure - Dan likes it. |
Synergy 1.2.2 |
Synergy allows you to create effective multi-monitor desktops by assembling many machines (with varying operating systems) togther. Very cool for people who want to use one Keyboard and mouse, with multiple desktops/laptops in a development or demonstration environment. |
None I know of! |
Tortoise CVS |
Being a bit new to CVS, fizmez.com tried Tortoise CVS when it was December 2004 project of the month. It does, indeed, rock but could perhaps work a little better with SSH and be a little more re-configurable. |

Exemplar Map 0.8.9 |
Software that uses freely available Geodata with global coverage. You can add your own data on top also. |
MapInfo |
NASA World Wind 1.3 |
World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.
Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara. |
The Earth itself |
Filezilla |
Best of a bad lot. I still want my Windows Explorer ssh:// view! This is possible, by the way... |
FTP Explorer |
Power Archiver 7.02 |
Winzip? That's so 1990's. Power Archiver is
like WinZip but without that annoying nagware screen. What more do you need? Uninstall WinZip and install Power Archiver NOW. Again, Windows XP has kind of left a seperate archiving application a little redundant, but a 5-star rating remains due to .tar.gz support ;o) Versions later than 7.02 are not free. |
Windows XP's built-in archiver, WinZip |
Spacemonger |
Where has all my filespace gone? Ah - there it is. |
Unknown |
The Gimp 2.2.8 |

Real Alternative 1.30 |

Real One player is Bloooooaaaated. Uninstall it. Put this in instead. Works with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. |
Real One Player |

WinAmp 5 |

WinAmp |

a complete network graphing solution |
Ethereal 0.10.12 |
Packet sniffing? Ethereal's for you! BUT. Its reliance on LibPCap
means that it can't do PPP. ICK. |
Sniffer |
N Top |
What's going on on this machine's network connection? |
Unknown |
Network Stumbler |
Less need for this these days, what with Windows XP's Wireless LAN code. Still a nice little project though and, combined with a GPS device, a useful gathering app. Still, the need for this software is declining
and so a low rating results. |
AirSnort and Windows XP |
Open STA DNS Server |
Um, if you need one! |
Freemind 0.7.1 |
Do you have a HUGE .txt file with all your notes in it? Are you
a student (of anything). Dump notepad now, use Freemind. |
None I know of. None that do the job as well for free anyway. |
GanttProject 1.11 |
A project management application |
Microsoft Project |
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 |
Sunbird is coming. But not quickly enough. I REEEEEEEALY REEEEEEEEEEALY want to drop Outlook. Like a stone. It runs your life, but soooo sloooowly. Unfortunately, Thunderbird NEEDS to work with
Microsoft Enxhange Server's meeting request system. That means it needs to have a calendar application. A simple tasks system would be great too. Combine that with a Sync application for 3GPP 27.007-compliant mobile devices and you've got a sure-fire winner. |
Outlook, Outlook Express |
Open Office 1.1.4 |
2005 may be the year of Open Office. When OpenOffice.Org 2.0 is released in the Spring, you will hear about it. When that happens, will people all over the world uninstall Microosft Offfice? Probably not. Why not? Because OpenOffice still doesn't have a decent Mail and Calendar application. Having said that, if you just want a free alternative to Microsoft Word, OpenOffice is it! |
Microsoft Office |
SimpleOCR 3.1 |
An OCR (Optical Chartacter Recognition) application |
Spambayes |
Get spam at work? This could help. |
Fedora Distribution GNU/Linux Core 3 |
A completely free operating system and selelction of useful software. Very pretty, but STILL not ready for the mainstream. |
Microsoft XP, Redhat Distribution, Slackware Distribution,
Debian Distribution, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Sun Solaris |
Copernic Desktop Search |
"awesome" says Dan, me I prefer Google |
Google Desktop Search |
Google Deskbar 0.5.95 |
I never use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox's address bar. I barely ever fill in a form. I have Google Deskbar - why would I? |
None. |
